Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a glycoprotein hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland and, along with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), is classified as a gonadotropin. The primary physiological role of LH in women of reproductive age is to induce ovulation in mature follicles. A significant surge in LH secretion, known as the LH peak, occurs mid-menstrual cycle, approximately 24 hours prior to ovulation. During this peak, LH levels are 8 to 10 times higher than those observed during the follicular phase. Following ovulation, LH levels decline rapidly. Post-ovulation, LH facilitates the formation of the corpus luteum and stimulates it to secrete estrogen and progesterone. In males, LH primarily promotes the proliferation of testicular interstitial cells, earning it the alternative name interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH). It stimulates the synthesis and secretion of androgen (testosterone, T) by these cells and works in concert with FSH and testosterone to support sperm maturation.
